Hurtigruten, The Trip from Tromso to Floro

October 15, 2001

Dear Friends and Family,

This is part 2 of our boat show. Last time we described life aboard the M/S Polarlys. This diary is devoted what we saw during the three-day journey - at least part of what we saw anyway. For most of the trip, the weather was not cooperative. The rain and mist made pictures of grand vista look pretty gray. In person, these gray scenes were still impressive but you'll just have to take our word for it (or take the trip yourself!) I can understand why summer is more popular than fall for the cruise - more sun and more daylight hours. But what we saw was wonderful nonetheless.

For most of our trip, the Polarlys wound its way in between islands and around rocks. Each narrow passage called for pictures. Then we went into dramatic harbors - more pictures. And if we had time to get off, we needed even more pictures. We will not bore you with ALL of these, just a few.

Sometimes we looked out and saw only rocks and islands and couldn't tell where our big boat would go.

Even when we were passing the rocks, it was surprising how close we had to pass.

Yet more rocks in our path

This rock had a perfect hole in it. Interesting.

We passed under several bridges that liked various parts of the Archipelago.

We had two hours in Trondheim, one of the ancient capitols of Norway, and we wandered as far as the old cathedral. The fall colors dressed up the gray and imposing building.

The Trondheim harbor gave us yet another "reflected boats" picture. I think we're developing a theme here.

In Kristiansund, we found yet another perfect boat and yet another perfect pier.

In Kristiansund and other ports, every part of the rocky harbor space is used. This small boat yard is perched on a rock.

Marianne with Viking friend in a shore town whose name we have forgotten. Getting old I guess.

So there you have it. A three-day passage from north of the Arctic Circle. This must certainly be a highlight of our journey. But, who knows? There's a lot more out there.

Take care and look out the window.

John and Marianne
