Cervinia in the Italian Alps

July 9, 2003

Dear Family and Friends,

After St. Bernard pass, we still had one more mountain resort to sample. The 25 or 30 kilometer (18 to 20 mile) drive from the Aoste Valley put us in Cervinia, yet another spectacular ski town. We were in a steep bowl with The Matterhorn looming over us and other peaks surrounding us almost all around.

We had no reservations and didn't know what to expect for places to stay. It turned out that the town was filled with hotels, large and small, but we continued our recent successful practice and drove through town until the road ended. Marianne spotted a chalet that looked perfect and her judgement was perfect.

The Hotel Cime Bianche offered us a room not much bigger than the bed, but we could look out one side to Matterhorn and, from a tiny balconey, to the other wall of the spectacular valley and Cervinia below us.

We quickly moved in and moved on to sipping a bottle of wine while lounging in the terrace sun. We shared the terrace with a class of ski instructors learning the latest in snow board techniques. I think Marianne saw these guys and seriously considered taking up the sport.

Our two days here were too short. We did manage a couple "room and board" dinners in the hotel and concluded that we would gain a pound a day if our stay were longer, unless we joined the boys every day skiing on the glacier.

The main exercise we had were a couple walks down into town, and back up! We planned more serious hikes in the hills but just didn't have the motivation. I managed a short early morning walk and watched the mountain shadows move up the valley as the first of the cable trams glided above.

Maybe next time we'll be more energetic. There has to be a next time because it was very hard to say goodbye to our last Alpine town. But "real Italy" waited ahead of us and we look forward to new places.

Stay tuned.

John and Marianne
