Erlangen - A Pair Of Markets

November 29 , 2008

Written November 30

Dear Friends and Families,

For the second stop on our Weinachtsmarkt 2008 Tour, I think we get to record two markts for a single, nearby stop: Erlangen.

The first stop was at the "historic" Weihnachtsmarkt, considerably smaller and more local than yesterday's Christkindlmarkt in Nuremberg
We arrived in the daylight but the party had already started. We, however, had more important things to do. First, shop.
Then, eat. Marianne found a kiosk that sold "langos"; fried bread, Hungarian-style. Since we were on our way to dinner, Marianne and Nancy had the "natural" version, just a light painting of garlic butter.
After that, we all sampled the local version of the ubiquitous "Glue-wine". No Markt visit would be complete without this wine warmer upper.

From the "historic" to the traditional, Erlangen sponsors a pair of Christmas markets. The "traditional" is held in a different town square and has a nice selection of seasonal shopping, Glüwein stalls, and even an appropriate manger scene, although it is pretty hard to discover the religious theme amongst all the decidedly secular activity.

So, two towns and three Christmas markets on this, the first weekend of Advent. Three more weekends to go and we still hope to see more than our share of German holiday fun.

John and Marianne.
