HOUSE DIARIES

Rainy Day in Eltville

June 7, 2009

Written June 14

Friends and Families ,

On Sunday after the Payne's big party, they took us to the neighboring village of Eltville. Here's what we saw.

Eltville is a charming small village in the Rhinegau region. It is surrounded by vineyards and, once a year, celebrates its roses. On this day, the weather was not as cooperative as we'd hoped, but it was fun in any event.
Many of the old buildings had been restored and a few others were going through the process. For a price, one can still get craftsmen who work in a style of hundreds of years ago.
Most of the Eltville rose show was in the castle that guards the Rhine. The whole place was filled with color and history.
Maybe next time we will take one of the boats that move tourists up and down the Rhine. (Tip: use the boats downstream and the train "upstream", unless you favor several hours on the boat.)
Every fair deserves a souvenir or two. In this case, we were sold by the demonstration of bird whistles.
Click the box below to see the rose pictures we took. It is a simple page, but sometimes pictures really are all one needs.

Eltville. Nice village. Nice festival. Next time we'll try for better weather, though.
