HOUSE DIARIES

Görlitz, Holy Grave

April 22-25, 2011

Written May 1

A neighboring cemetery had been used for hundreds of years but some of the buildings from the early 19th Century were typical of wealthy families.
At the "Heilliges Grab", or Holy Grave, this small church has "Gethsemene" above and "Adam's Chapel" below. The two rooms are connected with a "crack", that symbolizes the opening of the earth on Christ's death.
In the corner of the park , an angel points the way to the empty body shelf.

Throughout the old buildings, there were examples of "graffiti" over the centuries, many dating from the 1500's.

But, that story is told on the next page.
