HOUSE DIARIES

Six Weeks At Home

June 9 through July 5
Updated July10

Dear Friends and Families,

It has been a busy two months, since we returned from Spain and Portugal, too busy to do much updating of diaries and it makes me worry.  Without these visual records, I wonder if my old head can remember what we have been doing.  In the end, that is the core benefit of doing all this: memory joggers for old heads.

d130609_01_NonFest.jpgd130609_02_MndRobin.jpgIn early June, we visited Robin up in Wiesbaden and wandered around a local street fair for a final excursion.  She and Art are finally moving back to the States.  It seems hard to believe we have seen them finish TWO five-year government assignments to Germany, separated by a five year stint in Texas.  They are really our last connection to Marianne's short career as a Department of Defense Dependent's Schools employee, an interesting chapter in our life here, and we will miss them.

Speaking of leaving, we are finally taking concrete steps to move on to our own next chapter.  We have found a realtor to sell our house and have determined an asking price.  We will not recover all we have put into our home, nor will we have enough cash to pay for a house back in coastal California, where we would really like to live. However, we have wonderful memories of our Franconian jewel box.

Speaking of home, we got excited by all the talk of a "super moon" and took pictures of the big deal moonrise and the surrounding sunset scenes.  The pictures were not so special, but we enjoyed the excuse for just spending some twilight hours in our local fields.  We need to enjoy our farm surroundings while we can.

The biggest deal of June was the arrival of Brian, Jen, and Rich for a visit.  We tried to do as much as we could, from visits to museums, street fairs, Bamberg and Nuremberg, and just hanging around.  It was very special having enough time with 10-year-old Rich to gain more of a connection than we have ever had.  Hopefully, our new life in the States will allow more of this.  For now, we'll make do with memory pictures:

A full day at the Nuremberg zoo.  It was fun to watch all the kids enjoying the animals and, maybe, the animals enjoying the kids.

We worked in a small local history museum in Forchheim.

Our annual July 4th bar-b-que was a smaller group than the usual forty or sixty folks, but the weather held and the steaks turned out even better.  The evening ended with a family bonfire.

Finally, we had to send the little family off on their plane from Frankfurt to Denver.
Now we are back to concentrating on the whole house-sale challenge.  It definitely is a melancholy activity, as we face leaving behind a wonderful house, facing an uncertain future.  Oh well, we've stepped of the edge before.

Regards,

John and Marianne
