HOUSE DIARIES

Natural Bridge

November 18, 2007

Written December 2

Dear Friends and Families,

To get away from my temporary work location, I needed a quick Sunday Autumn drive and from Lynchburg the easiest seemed to be a spin up to "Natural Bridge". It turned out to be a pleasant drive, a good opportunity for late Fall colors, and a quick visit to a kitschy, but historic, tourist attraction.

The drive through the mountains above Lynchburg was beautiful. It was hard to capture the colors because the road is mostly narrow and twisty, but there were a few places where I could stop and try to "capture the moment". Nevertheless, I must say it was better in person!

Natural Bridge has been a Virginia tourist attraction ever since George Washington was a young surveyor and mapped the location for Lord Fairfax in 1750. Four years later, his friend Thomas Jefferson bought the 157 acre site for 20 schillings. (Natural Bridge is reported to be for sale again, but the price has gone up. )

The walk through the woods, past the remains of a recently-died 1600-year-old, was pleasant. At the end of the walk, the Bridge was OK. It's not the Grand Canyon, but it was definitely worth the Sunday drive from Lynchburg.

John and Marianne.
