HOUSE DIARIES

A Pair of Street Fests

July 6, 2009

Written July 18

Friends and Families ,

Henry's trip was getting short now, and we still had neighborhood things to see and do. On this Sunday, we would go from our neighbor town of Höchstadt all the way to Afrika (Forchheim version).

In Höchstadt, we showed Henry a real Bavarian town celebration. There were street kiosks selling all kinds of household goods, from clothes to brushes. We explained that this was a traditional village service, ever since the Middle Ages. We hadn't said it would be exciting, just typical. For Henry, the highlight was this old tour bus, still available if anyone is interested in chartering a driving tour in Franconia.
After that excitement, we headed east to Afrika, or at least to Forchheim's annual festival celebrating the popular German tourist destination.
Shopping is always a main attraction at a German street fair, no matter what the theme. Henry considered the wig, and we thought it would have been a great attention-getter back home, but he decided against it.
There were also camels and a story teller from northern Africa, German-speaking N. Africa.
But the best attraction of any local street fair is always food. Henry tried, and said he liked, a colorful East African lunch.

This would be our last big excursion day with our visitor. Soon it would be off to the airport and the long ride home -- longer than just Höchstadt to Afrika.
