HOUSE DIARIES

Morning Mountains

April 23
Written April 29
Dear Friends and Family,

Yesterday's rain had me hoping for better weather.  I was so hopeful that I again got up and out of the house in the pre-dawn twilight to get ready for some sunrise picture-taking.  However, down in the Rosental Valley, things did not look promising, nothing but low, gray clouds, not good for sunrise and not very good at all for any sort of pictures.

After a half-hour of grayness, I turned south into the mountains, hoping for, but not expecting, better weather.  After about 15 minutes of a twisty, narrow road, I emerged from the steep canyon and had hope.  I immediately jumped out and took these two pictures:
Looking back down the incoming road.
Looking forward and seeing mountains!

Encouraged, I continued toward the village of Zell-Pfarre.  When I got there, the sun was peeking through one end of the valley (called the "Zell Mitterwinkel") and already lighting the mountains to the south, the border mountains with Slovenia.

While I was taking pictures, a dense fog took over.  The scene went from clear to cloudy in minutes, effectively ending my photography, but creating a sense of magic nonetheless.

Hoping that going higher would get me above the new clouds, I continued up to Schaidasattell (Shaida Pass), elevation 1,000 meters (3,300 feet).  When I got there, the fog was just arriving and it managed to cover things over before I could really do much.  On a hunch, I left the camera set up and just waited.

It was a worthwhile wait. The clouds drifted away and revealed wonderful mountain scenery on every side.  My main challenge was to STOP taking pictures but, eventually, the clouds returned in earnest and made the decision for me.  Some of THESE shots I will work on in a larger format, that's for sure.

By 8:30 I was back home at Wahaha, back under gray skies but with more photography enthusiasm than I had had for days.  Now, if the weather would just clear for our drive through these same mountains into Slovenia.

But, that's another story.

Regards,

John
