Dear loyal fans(?),
Not a lot of news in the last couple weeks. I guess that's a good sign. I've been busy at work as has Marianne. In fact, "busy" seems to be the norm now between two careers and just settling in. Here's our potpourri of regular life.
We've essentially finished furnishing the apartment. Here's the couch and coffee table. That coffee table may look like a camera case but that's just our style. The other piece of furniture we bought is an antique dining table. It's quite nice: authentic Austro-Hungarian from the 20's. Walnut veneer and very Art Deco. Like many things here, there's good news bad news. It's a wonderful antique that we would like to keep. The bad news is that it's illegal to take antiques out of the country so we'll never be able to bring it home.
We bought the table for Marianne's birthday (and because we were getting sore backs from eating on our coffee table.) It was a Sunday and we enjoyed wandering down "the spuce" and buying some decorated eggs direct from the artist. We also saw some good modern art. At least Marianne tells me it's good. I'm an engineer. We don't study weird art forms. While debating the merits of buying the table, we ate at a very nice Indian restaurant. It must have mellowed us because we did indeed taxi back to the antique store. So I wouldn't feel left out, I also got some treasures from the tourist shops. Soviet Union flags are cheap here.
Speaking of cheap, here's some shots from Marianne's school. Kids working hard.. Kids hardly working. Kids on parade. Teachers(!) dancing. This last shot was at the Middle School's Halloween dance. Marianne and I were chaperones. 80% of the School showed up - that's 32 kids. It was fun because we recognized the universality of mankind. What that means is that, even in Kyiv, all the boys sat on one side and all the girls stood on the other. Nice to know that some things are just like back home.
Take care all and write if you want. We read each and every fan letter.
