Graduation and Other
Celebrations
Sunday Morning, June
13, 1999
Hi People,
Not exciting news lately. School
is almost out. It's warm. Hot even. Of course there's not much air
conditioning around so warm or hot have a different meaning than in
"the West". Friday night we slept out on our porch. It was like
camping out. Kind of fun, even for those of us who are starting to
qualify for Senior Citizen's discounts.
Today, I think we'll just send a
bunch of snapshots with captions. A photo album of
sorts.
A fuzzy shot of a stork
nesting on the power poles. There are also two or three
chicks. I put this in to prove to Marianne (or to me) that I
need a camera with a zoom lens.
Marianne and I are still
shopping for souvenirs. She leaves for the States on the
21st so she needs to stock up.
Last weekend we went to
the Kyiv Art Show. Not New York or San Francisco yet but
OK.
Grocery shopping with a
friend of mine. Last time Leif and I had worked together we
both had long hair. I don't know what happened to
his.
This market also had a
chick section. I think this is where people go to stock up
the summer dacha. Pretty cute anyway.
Graduation was last week.
Three kids were in the first graduating class from Kyiv
International School (KIS).
The U.S. Ambassador gave
a very nice graduation speech and his reward was a picture
with Marianne. Pretty special huh.
He also got a picture
with two of the teachers new baby. The mom and dad are going
back to Colorado and, after three or four months, have just
received permission to also bring daughter
Riley.
KIS also joined some
other small schools this week and had Sports Day. Everyone
said they had fun. The pictures remind me (John) that kids
really don't seem very different whether they are in Kyiv or
San Jose.
There was a Teacher
Appreciation night sponsored by the PTA. Pretty nice and,
again, pretty normal. Just like home.
Same night. That's the
boss opening wine. That may not be the norm for U.S. schools
but the happy faces on teachers and administrators as they
look forward to vacation are completely
normal.
Last night we had a KIS
staff dinner. Quite nice and a good last chance for everyone
to get together. The guy sitting is Sasha and he's smiling
at the flowers he had just won.
Finally, a few of the
teacher-types looking at the yearbooks that had just arrived
that day. That scene could be anywhere.
So, that's it. Now we're heading out into the sun to poke around the
city. Maybe next summer we'll get a dacha but for now, we have too
much to see around here.
