Our hotel was in
this little village of Stechelberg. It looked even smaller
from our cable car.
The first of three
transfer stations.
Our ride was
literally just over the mountain crags.
Our goal was
Schilthorn at 10,000 feet.
The panarama
platform had useful maps of the surrounding peaks. However,
the next picture shows the reality for this
scene.
The view in any
direction was spectacular. Clouds hid many of the distant
peaks but that just made what we could see more
special.
Breithorn
mountain.
More peaks -- I'm
not sure which these are. Snow-covered mountain peaks look a
lot alike to city-folks.
I believe these
three are (left to right) Eiger, Munch, and Jung Frau. That
puffy cloud along the bottom almost obscured the mountains
within an hour.
Even more
peaks.
When we looked down
at the transfer station at Birg, the boiling fog was
threatening to hide our ride home.
Back at Breithorn,
the view seemed to change from minute to minute. The sun
angle changed. The fog attacked and retreated.
One of the treats
was the James Bond Champagne Breakfast. The movie "On Her
Majesty's Service" was filmed at Schilthorn and there is a
theater where clips of the chase scenes down the mountain
were showing.
The best part of
the meal was looking out the windows. The platform rotated
so we saw everything.
By the time we were
ready to leave, the fog had obliterated Birg and the ariving
tram seemed to materialize in mid-cloud.
Going down, we
looked up at the same peaks we had looked down at. I don't
know which is better!
The last leg of the
cable car ride went past rocks that seemed close enough to
touch.
We also passed
tourists on the way up. Thinking about the fog we'd seen
above, I was thankful we'd taken the first tram up the
mountain. But, the fog comes and goes, so I'm sure they'll
have their special vistas too.
