HOUSE DIARIES

Ryan's First Easter

April 8, 2007

Written April 22

Dear Friends and Families,

One advantage of this month-long business trip is that Marianne and I get to visit a bit with friends and family. This is even more special on holidays, and so it was on Easter.

On our drive up from Lynchburg, we were treated to Winter's final act. In the higher elevations, there snow covered all the trees and fields. We took a bit of time on side roads, just to enjoy it.

On Saturday, we visited friends. First we spent some time at Jack and Joan Sorensen. Jack has been retired a couple years now I believe and last year he started a "hobby" as a Midwest farmer. He bought a 1,000 acre farm that had been in his family and he and his cousins and nephews raise North Dakota "dry land" crops on it. The cousins and nephews do the farming while Jack takes pictures (my kind of farming!) and works on getting the old farm house back in order (sounds familiar). Showing great wisdom, Jack and Joan return to Maryland before the long winter sets in. Now that Marianne and I live in our own farming community, we have even more in common.

Next, we went over to Alice and Chuck Negin's house, where we stayed the night. Actually, we went over to their houses, as they were in the process of moving from one place to another, a few hundred yards away. The new house is their old house that, after years of being rented out, had been refurbished. It's a charming home in Washington Grove, a unique community that warrants a story all by itself. I'll add that to my list of projects!

After Sunday breakfast at the Negins', we headed over to Geoff and Suzanne's for a family dinner and another visit with Ryan, our new grandson. When we got there, Ryan was asleep in Suzanne's grandmother's lap. He spent the rest of the afternoon going from lap to lap.

We always enjoy a gathering with Suzanne's family. It's a lively and fun bunch, and Marianne and I are grateful that Geoff, and now Ryan, have such a warm extended family. It makes our own distance some how less problematic, I suppose.

So, that was Easter. Just a few more weeks in America before we go home again. We'll get in another family visit, see some friends, and visit a few tourist sites. Eventually, I'll get all this recorded on our diaries, because that's what diaries are all about. I know we can't trust memory alone!

John and Marianne.
