HOUSE DIARIES

Henry, Part One

June 20, 2009

Written June 22

Friends and Families ,

Nephew Henry just graduated from high school and we treated him to a German vacation. This is the first part of that story.

We picked him up at the Frankfurt airport, after he had traveled almost 24 hours on his way from Fresno, California. On the theory that resting is for wimps, we visited our first castle less than an hour after leaving the airport.

The Mespelbrunn Castle is a 15th Century gem in the center of the Spessart forest region. It is still occupied and offers tours of the public rooms - but no photos.

After a couple of days resting at home, we drove over to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a must-see tourist attraction not far from us. We took our teenager to the required stops: a "schneeball" bakery and the torture museum. The bakery treat is a ball of pie dough that folks either like -- or don't. I'm a "don't" myself, but Henry liked it.
One of the best parts of our day was a walk along the ramparts of the town walls. From up here, we had wonderful views of the old houses that make Rothenburg so special.
In the end, the best part of the tour was just hanging around with our young nephew. We took some standard tourism pictures and now we look forward to our next events.

Next up, Bamberg. Another tour.
