HOUSE DIARIES

Görlitz, Architecture

April 22-25, 2011

Written May 1

Reportedly, Hitler made an inspirational speech from this building to the city gathered below in Market Square.
Frauenturm - Old Lady's Tower

Fountain and old hotel.

Duty house.

City Hall

A street of grand, old houses.

The back sides were not always so grand. Reminded us of Kiev.

An elegant double-house. Needs some work

This huge old home has been remade into a school.

Note the upper porch supports of the well-restored house.

This house was next door. Not yet restored.

This storefront seemed like the door had closed in 1989 and never opened.

I think this is the Church of the Holy Trinity. Nicest of the churches we saw.

This was a more modern church, out in the "new" neighborhood of late 19th Century buildings.
The Art Nouveau inside one of the small department stores.
This wonderful department store interior had been used for almost 100 years, but closed two or three years ago. Anybody want to start a new business?
An Art Nouveau "passage" shopping mall.
A nice little street

The Poland side of the Nieße River.
Another nice street.
A center city building among the best restored. Nice coffee shop on the first floor.
City Hall tower.

The gargoyles are remaining us to NOT take on another project -- but, a 5,000 square foot (450 sq-m) old city house for just 49,000 euros? ($75,000)
