Memorial Day
May 27-29
Dear Diary and Friends and Family,Written May 30 A quick little diary to have a place for some neighbor pictures. First, I need to document that Babi's grandson Zaiden has grown big enough to ride his own bike over from Nana's house (three blocks). I gathered that this was a milestone, so all family milestones need to be documented. A couple of blocks away, the local ice cream store (Ampersand) was celebrating a Memorial Day anniversary. The store opened on the holiday three years ago, I believe, and has always emphasized community involvement - and excellent ice cream. The birthday party has grown big enough to warrant closing off the street so that local merchants can set up kiosks and always available food trucks can provide plenty of calories. But the real calories for Memorial Day came from a neighborhood pot luck. This is also an annual tradition of sorts, although this year it sprang to life at the last minute when neighbor Joan noted that many neighbors were in town for the holiday. "The Commons", a grass area between two of the old homes, is always available. For food, everyone brought a dish or two, so there was far more to eat than we needed. Joan brought ingredients for "Chow Fun", her traditional contribution to these gatherings. As is also traditional, Gene was in charge of frying up the pounds of bacon before Joan stirred in noodles, tons of noodles. Marianne prepared Teriyaki Chicken and we are still eating leftovers two days later. (Fine with me!) In the end, 20 neighbors had more than enough food, plenty of
conversation, and another reminder of how nice it is to live on
Cambridge Avenue.
No more activities planned, but who knows?Stay tuned. John and Marianne |
