Christmas

February 12, 20000000

Dear Friends and Family,

I discovered a Y2K Problem! That's of some note because all the hype seemed to be without basis -- but now I have proof positive, something went wrong.

On January 7, we sent out the first Diaries of the new millennium. Normally, these are eagerly snapped up by our loyal fans - and we get fan mail in return. In fact, that's the main reason we do this stuff. But, for the new month-year-decade-century-millenium, no one answered. (Well, one kid answered but she always does.) It MUST be Y2K. No other possible reason. However, I'm sure it's safe now since we have started a new month. (And you can't get rid of us THAT easy.)

This first batch will be just a quick synopsis of our Christmas and New Years. Not much text because my mind is fuzzy after all this time. It was December after all.

Pictures 1 and 2 show me and Marianne at our company Christmas dinners. Note the difference. At MY dinner, we are sitting quietly, sipping beer, chatting with my co-workers and spouses. Team building. That sort of thing. At Marianne's dinner, she's falling backwards under the Limbo pole, dancing to loud 60's music and generally making a spectacle of herself. Fortunately, she fit right in with that school bunch. (By the way, I enjoyed her dinner more but don't tell her - or my co-workers.)

Christmas Eve, the one that's on December 24th, we joined friends at a Chinese restaurant. It was great fun even though we were the only ones in the restaurant celebrating any sort of Christmas festivities since the local Christmas was still two weeks away. Nevertheless, it's the way Christmas Eve should be. Friends, family (Gabby was still here), food and laughs.

For New Year's Eve, the one that's at the end of December, Marianne and I celebrated quietly. We had a nice afternoon dinner at a very chic French restaurant, went home and rested up (we're getting OLD) and then went to our nearby streets. We went to a park near St. Michael's church and opened champagne. Elsewhere there were thousands of Kievians welcoming in the new year but we were very happy with our winter wonderland and the few people around us.

Later that weekend, we continued our walks, snow and all. All together, between our Christmas, everyone's New Years and the Orthodox Christmas on Jan 7, we had almost three weeks of little or no work. We decided we could do THAT for a living. But, in fact, we even looked forward to getting back to work - mostly to see the people and share what WE did and THEY did.

And so, that's our part of a similar exchange with friends we connect with electronically.

Coming up: The Remodel Starts, Snowed Out - in DC, Happy Valentines.
