Moving In and
looking around
(September 7,
1998)
Hello Again,
It's now September 6 or so
and we have really arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine. Last night we slept for
12 hours (the last uninterrupted sleep we'd have for a week!). It's
Sunday so we need to look around before Marianne starts work
tomorrow.
Overall, this was a very
favorable first impression. Kyiv is a beautiful city. It may need
some repairs and restoration but the drama potential is certainly
visible. 'Til next time.

The
first hurdle is the four-door exit process. The outside one
is wide open but inside, we have three separate doors, each
with its own key. I guess this makes us very secure but it
takes some getting used to, in part because 2 of the 3 keys
are simple "sliding" keys -- not our normal turning keys. Oh
well, we wanted a change.

Out
in the street, we see lots of landmarks: - Kyiv Gate
|
|
-
Souvenir Stand- I bought a set of nesting dolls from "Alex"
here. His English was OK and he talked of prior visits to
New York and Boston. He promised to go to California next
time.

-
Old Restaurant - We didn't visit, but it's a nice
picture.
|

-
History Museum Another good view from near our house. It's a
museum next to the site of the original Byzantine church of
Kyiv. The oldest part of the city is on the river banks
below.

We
did eat at a restaurant in an alley off Khreschatyk (the
main downtown street). We picked this one because it had
nice outdoor tables -- and English subtitles on the menu!
Food was good and service friendly.
