Buildings in
Kyiv
September
11, 1998
While Marianne is
working, I'm mostly just wandering around. The weather in this first
week has been great so I've seen some of the sights near here. Here
are a few:

Square in
front of St. Sophia's

St.
Sophia's. The grounds are a wonderful park near the middle
of the city. There are several buildings ranging from the
11th century to the 16th and 18th centuries.

Kraschatyk -- main street downtown. Just a few blocks from
St. Sophia's quiet. On Sunday, this square had a huge stage
with lots of rock music. And temporary basketball
courts.

Kraschatyk again. This is a picture of a "classic" building
. It has been beautifully restored. Rumor has it that
apartments here are $5,000 per month and more. We won't be
here!

In fact,
there are zillions of interesting buildings in the downtown area.
Many are not yet restored but quite a few are already very nice. I
hope we can get enough of the language under our belts to go to the
churches and museums in particular. After the collapse of the Soviet
Union, church restoration has been a high priority.
