HOUSE DIARIES

DB and Other Museums

Friends and Families ,

Nürnberg is one of our nearby cities and we have visited any number of times. However, Marianne has never expressed an interest in the Deutsche Bahn (Train) Museum, so I used Henry's visit as an excuse to see just what the place is like.

We discovered that there are actually three museums in this downtown Nürnberg building, a block from the main train station. The lowest two levels are train museums, above that is a floor of "transportation" displays (Deutsche Post), and above that is a museum laying out the development of communication in Germany (Deutsche Telecom).

The train portion of the DB Museum has a good selection of old and new, model and full-size train displays. Above right, Henry poses before the oldest passenger coach in Germany, dating from the 1835 Adler steam engine line between Nürnberg and nearby Fürth.
The full-size model of a modern bullet-train contrasted with the steam engine displays in the same hall.
The "transportation" part of the museum had a couple of fun examples of the smallest products of the German car industry as well as early trucks.
"Communication" technology spanned everything from quill pens through old-fashioned telephone switchboards to a modern (in the 60's) train ticket terminal.
We completed our Nuremberg tour with the mandatory turning of the ring in the downtown market square. Henry made his wish. (No more museums?)

So, that was our DB Museum tour. Glad I finally did it, but Marianne's reluctance had not been without some basis.
