July 6 through 8

Dear Friends and Family,
Our next destination was to visit friends in Lyon. We have been
to Lyon a few times before, so it was nice to look forward to another
"familiar" place.
The drive from Beaune to Lyon can be made in a couple of hours, but we
took many more than that. We stuck to side roads and worked in a
lunch in Bray, and stops at a bronze artist in Lys and at a
church in Chapaize. Some pictures:
Coming into Lyon was not as pleasant as the hills before. Lyon is
a big city, with narrow and twisty old streets. Isabelle and
Pedro live on top of the Croix Rousse district, among the oldest areas
of the city and definitely a challenge to locate, despite good
directions. In the end, we needed two tries at getting the right
parking, but Marianne was driving, so it was all taken in stride.
Isabelle and Pedro have rented a penthouse apartment with what may be
the best view in all of Lyon. It was hard to not just stand on
the glass-enclosed veranda and stare at the city spreading out before
us. The pictures don't do justice to the real thing.
For activities, we worked in a bus tour and plenty of walking.
The walking was necessary to compensate for all the eating and
drinking. Lyon is a center for both the food and the wine industry
in France and, thanks mostly to our generous friends, we tried to
support the local economy. The walks included a stroll through
one of Lyon's "traboules", covered paths connecting the old silk
industry factories. Nowadays, the buildings have been converted
into apartments, since the silk industry left many years ago.
Another favorite walk for Marianne and me was the Saturday market in
Croix Rousse. Later in the day, Isabelle and Pedro led us through the
old part of town.
All in all, a wonderful stay. Thanks to Isabelle and Pedro and to the city of Lyon. We'll be back.
Next: Perigord, more friends and food!
